Brandon Rhyder “Behind The Pine Curtain” by TxLogCabin
Brandon Rhyder’s east Texas roots definitely influenced the title of this CD, Behind the Pine Curtain. Born in Carthage, home to the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, Rhyder stays true to those ties, but is young enough to let it rock a little in some cases. Add some great harmony with Wade Bowen and a little extra magic from Rich Brotherton to Rhyder’s own talent and you got a great listen in store for all 12 tracks. Rhyder sets the pace of Behind the Pine Curtain with "Black Cat". Gets a little bluesy with "The Good Old Days". "Learnin’ to Crawl" tries a little pop/rock and roll, rite of passage angst. "Nowhere Man" glooms things down with a story about getting nowhere in life. "Walking Shoes" does another pop/rock treatment about a woman who can’t make up her mind and wears out those "Walking Shoes." One Piece at a Time is a mournful ballad about lost love, the refusal to give it up, and to keep chasing that dream.
"Up in Flames" is a slightly morbid look at a form of addiction and what it can do to the relationships that are really the reason for living. The pace is quick and treatment is a combination of country /pop. Rhyder finds his stride with The "Redneck Song". Good harmony, easy rhythm, and country treatment really clinches the attitude of being a redneck and being comfortable with that. "I’ll admit I got a couple of Chevy’s blocked up knee deep in grass out in front of my yard, and most Saturday nights, me and Archie are drinking Schaeffer light." The refrain sums it up, "I’m just livin' life the best that I can, oh the redneck that I am." Questions takes a slow, soothing ride into meanings of life. "It’s not wrong or right to feel this way Will you love again will you be betrayed They’re just answers to questions we don’t know I know one day I’m gonna die but today I live for the ride." Crazy, Loco rocks up the pace with a self-deprecating search for self. He cares about what people think he is (crazy, lazy), but not enough to NOT act that way! "You think I’m crazy, you think I’m lazy Just running through life kind of aimlessly. You think I’m crazy, you think I’m lazy Just sowing wild oats like I don’t have a care." Rumorville is really the highlight of the CD. A fast-paced treatment of the rumor-dominant life in a small idyllic "best town to live in". "Down in Rumorville Where the stories always change And they always will Down in Rumorville Where nothing stays the same And the rumors always change." "I Can’t Write You A Song" is a pretty ballad about the inability to adequately express his love and adoration in a song. "I could say you’re like a bouquet of flowers I could say you’re like a the fresh morning rain I could say you’re like a blanket of falling leaves When winter starts blowing my way But for you, I can’t write a song." Besides being a great listen, Behind the Pine Curtain is a chance to experience some genuine Texas talent.
