Becca Dalrymple “One Road”

Long awaited One Road is truly a delight to the Texas ear. This second CD is pure Dalrymple and gives you as close a taste as comes with a recording of the charged atmosphere that is apparent at her live performances. Lots of high energy and free spirits, but also deeply introspective, this work is very indicative of what we hope to see in Texas music of the future. As this fledgling field starts to open for women, Dalrymple is definitely a glass ceiling pioneer and an honorable example for those that follow her lead. All 12 selections of this CD are authored or co-authored by her, and demonstrate her incredible range and flexibility in style. From the rollicking "Trainwreck" and pop-centered "Over" to traditional country sounds of "Freedom Bound" and "Teardrops", Dalrymple flexs her talent and leaves her mark upon Texas music history. Using the track titles, Becca sums up the entire message of the CD in one (albeit long) sentence: “Don’t Be Afraid to Fly down One Road, Overcome Shadows, get Lost In Love, despite the Teardrops and Trainwrecks; because, after all I Believe, we are all just Freedom Bound. Thank You.” Dalrymple had a little musical help in putting this CD together. She and Erik Herbst co-produced with the able assistance of Tres Diablos, Mike Boyd on guitars; Charlie Kautz on drums; Russ Sherefield on bass; and many others, whose names you will recognize if you follow Texas music. Dalrymple also credits her audience, “For all the people that listen to my music and occasionally put their hands together, in one way or another…I started this music thing because of you (and a little Sangria) and it is for you that I continue this journey…Thanks!!!” The title track, "One Road", is a traditional country treatment “Initially about …two lives that are inevitably going in opposite directions. It ended up being about life’s choices and consequences.” All of us must eventually choose
"Fly" is wonderfully uplifting old fashioned country with a twist of Texas today. Can’t think of anyone I would trust to pull this off, but Dalrymple. This was Stephenville native Dalrymple’s first song written after “moving to the cement,” as she put it. "Teardrops" is another upbeat country treatment of an old (almost) worn out theme. Nothing worn out about this version. Dalrymple credits Russ Shurefield with changing the tempo from traditional to “hoppin’.” "Freedom Bound" is another great country style tune that was written for the movie “Grand Champion”. Dalrymple says, “I sat in Vegas and left messages on my cell phone, singing the melody/lyrics. I later called Bobby Boyd to lend his pen. This tune was completed on Valentine’s Day, in Spicewood, Texas and recorded the following day to submit for the movie.” "Over" is too bubble-gum pop-sounding musically for my taste, but the lyrics are another story. She is true and insightful to an all-too frequent theme of “Over”. "Shadow" is another totally chick-indulgent tune. Beautiful music and a wistful look at “a total girl moment – the beauty of songwriting… we “get to” bare all.” in Dalrymple’s words. Don’t expect many fellas to get much from this one, but it sure hits home to many of the gentler persuasion. "Trainwreck" is pure rollicking good fun. The title refers to folks who are a “trainwreck, waiting to happen.” "I Believe" is another up tempo look at what could be a sad tale. Dalrymple, with the help of Mike Boyd, make it an inspiring look ahead to a brighter future. According to Dalrymple, “Mike Boyd put his wisdom to work and made this tune “believable.” "Don’t Be Afraid" is the perfect clencher to this effort. You can’t help swaying in time to the pure variety of musical talent that went into this one recording. As Dalrymple puts it, “I wrote this song for a friend believing it would have inside meaning, only. I never intended to underestimate listeners’ ears.” As great as this CD is, it just can’t compare to a live Becca performance.
