Christmastime with Michael Hearne at The Silver K Cafe Johnson City, TX by TxLogCabin

What a
holiday treat to bring 2006 to a close. A road trip to the hill
country in December gave me a chance to take in two of my favorites: the
Silver K Café in Johnson City and a performance by Michael Hearne.
Although hotels in Johnson City were booked because of the holiday
season, we just executed plan B and dragged the rolling bunkhouse
(travel trailer) to the Johnson City Road Runner RV Park for a night.
Weather was gorgeous and the drive down highway 281 was smooth and
scenic. Cheaper gas was the only thing that could have improved
the experience.
Before heading to the Silver K for the evening, we took in the exceptional Christmas lights in Johnson City. The JC merchants had engaged in a holiday lighting competition and really did their best to “out-shine” each other. The courthouse was a spectacular night time sight, complete with horse-drawn carriage rides. The Perdenales Electric Coop was an electric lighting fantasy that literally took your breath away. City Park was a holiday delight of winter wonderland scenes, and other merchants in Johnson City had plenty of lights and decorations to keep your senses stimulated. Kay and Al Pratt’s Silver K Café is one of the best places in the state to enjoy Texas style gourmet cuisine. With selections like chili rubbed rib eyes, pecan encrusted pork chops, and crab stuffed tilapia, there is a culinary experience on the menu for every taste bud you ever possessed. The wonderful food is expertly complimented with native Texan wines and ales and the best service that money can’t buy. If that isn’t worth your trip, then plan to enjoy all that with some of the greatest Texas music entertainment that can be imagined. That was all rolled into one unforgettable evening this particular night in December. We treated ourselves to a wonderful Silver K meal, visited with several of our other Texas music loving friends, then settled in to enjoy the story-telling marvel of Michael Hearne’s music. It was a relaxed and cozy atmosphere that was the perfect compliment to Hearne’s music. He delicately wove his music into our ears and deep in our hearts. It was obvious to all that he was enjoying this journey as much as any of us. Mike, Carmen, and Zeke pulled out all the stops and just kept spinning a musical spell. Just when you thought it was so perfect it might shatter, Hearne brought you back to earth with a jaunty Christmas carol or rowdy rendition of an old standard to which everyone would be compelled to sing along. Hearne even had a couple of drop-in guests that he invited up to sing a song or two, to the delight of the rest of the audience. The evening was soon over and we all wished each other merry Christmas and promised to meet there again, soon. Some of the sneakier of us noticed that the Silver K reopened the next morning at 7 AM. Guess where we ended up for a great breakfast before hitting the trail? Written by Cheryl Arthur, December, 2006 E-mail me about this review Read about TxLogCabin Read other reviews by TxLogCabin
