This little band from Alabama has their wheels set firmly on the road, with music that is strong, firm, and fun, as OKOM should be.  Their initial release on Duck Tape Music showcases a group of musicians who can stick to the roots, but also add a few new blooms.

The Skeeters lead off with a bouncy "Rhythm of the World", pushed along by the guest fiddle of James Pennybaker (who also adds mandolin and pedal steel to songs along the way).  Lead vocalist, Bert Newton, handles songwriting for much of the CD and does an excellent job.  His voice is smoky honky-tonk, with traces of Steve Fromholz and Waylon Jennings.  The writing is a nod to some OKOM (our kind of music) heroes, but not a rip-off.  He comes up with new words to express old feelings with no problem.  The next two songs, "Clydesdales" and "Country Pop", keep the country flowing and urge you to reach for another cold one.

The production and mixing is first rate throughout.  The band is ably produced by Johnny Sandlin, who has worked with the Allman Brothers.  Guest artists come from the very foundation of OKOM, with wonderful vocals by Ms. Bonnie Bramlett, and a growling B3 contribution from Funky Donnie Fritts on a great cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Late Again".  The Skeeters don't necessarily require the help though.  The rhythm section
Flash and Rick Eller, and lead guitar Matt Martin can hold their own, along with tasteful keyboards by Dan Barker.

The mix of material is also outstanding.  In addition to the Kristofferson cover, the Skeeters also do a wonderful presentation of a previously unrecorded Billy Joe Shaver tune called "Honey Child".  (One criticism here - according to Mr. Shaver there is no "d" on the end, it is Honey Chil' - LOL).  This is one cut where the baritone of Bert Newton sounds especially smooth.

Overall, the Skeeters have done a great job of emulating, not imitating.  This is the true mark of musical honesty.  These guys hopefully will hang around a while.  The band has a great website at www.theskeeters.com, and you may purchase the CD through their site.

If you are in the area, check them out.  From the CD, I would imagine they are a heck of a show.  If you cannot make the show, turn up the volume and blast "Country Pop" for a few minutes.  You will feel better.
