Perhaps this name doesn’t ring a bell with you.  Clay Potter is not a household name, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he is someday.

I first saw Clay Potter open a Shiner Sunday, just him and his guitar  performing only three songs.  He won me over.  His original tunes are taken directly from his heart and soul, and somehow he conveys that from the very first chord.  I later sat down and visited with this talented man as he finished a set playing drums for Randy Hopper’s band.  I also immediately purchased a CD.  Clay is just as genuine to talk with as he is in his songs.

The title track on the CD is my favorite.  "A New Man Now" is a good sampling of the talent this Nevada, Texas resident possesses.  It’s the true story written about the new man in the life of his wife, Kim – their son. Make no mistake, the little man is loved very much despite the attention he’s taken from his father.  As a parent, this one really touched my heart.

"Just Say No", the first track, is an upbeat, catchy tune that grabs your attention from the get-go. "The Finger" is as catchy as the first one. Clever lyrics and the upbeat style make me wanna grab Andy and head to the nearest dance floor.  Honestly, there’s not a bad tune on the entire CD.

Some of Potter’s songs made me feel reminiscent of my "Fun-Country- Honky-Tonkin’-Goin’-dancin’ " days at the Waterin’ Hole in Melissa Texas. Those were the days of sneakin’ in the bar, listening to good bands or 45’s spun by a DJ, including Merle, Moe and Joe, the Bellamy Brothers, etc.  Those were some good memories.  This is one of the best two-steppin’ CD’s around.  It’s hard to sit still while you listen.

This isn’t a CD full of mopey love ballads or folklore.  It’s sheer honky tonk band music at it’s finest.  Good music, good songwriting, and a tight band are just hard to beat.  You can catch Clay and his band "Texas Heat" LIVE around the Dallas area.  Look for his gigs on Miss Lana's Concert Central.  Check ‘em out!  You’ll be glad you did.
