The Texas Fiddler's Contest and Reunion is held on the Courthouse Square in Athens as a homecoming for many people. In 1932, the Bethel community started staging a countywide fiddlers contest as a climax to a farmers' study course. Beginning early on Friday morning, pickin' and fiddlin' takes place all around the downtown square. Groups of people crowd around to listen while the players practice before the contest. Later in the evening, a professional country western band plays for the street dance. There are concessions and novelty stands along the sidewalks, and there's always a carnival set up just off the square. Please bring quilts or lawn chairs to sit on while listening to the music and renewing old acquaintances.

The Festival will have concurrent musical events. Saturday will have Praise and Worship bands playing from about 11:00 am to 4:00 and will raise the sprit of the Lord. From 4:30-6:00 an incredible classical guitar quartet called Del Alma Guitar Quartet will play fast moving Spanish Flamingo waltzes, traditional classical composers and modern compositions all of which have garnered this young group of musicians excellent critical reviews. From 6:00-10:00 we plan to bring Tyler a Bluegrass Festival. The schedule of artists and bands is being composed so check back for details at a later date. The public is welcomed. Sunday will have several contests: a Texas National Guitar Contest (tm) and the Drummer's Big Bang Drum Contest (tm). We intend to showcase drummers for a spirited 1-2 hour contest. This is purely a people's choice award contest. A cash or in-kind prize will be awarded. The Texas National Guitar Contest will be an elite array of ten (10) solo sits and bands playing 2-4 songs each with judges deciding who the best band or soloist is based upon professional criteria such as originality, musicianship, entertainment ability and overall measures. A cash prize will be awarded to the winner. There will also be a people's choice award and a several hours of top-tier recording studio time will be awarded as a prize to this winner. Lastly, we are having a Guitar Fine Art Show. We are calling on all fine art painters to paint a painting of at least 18" x 24" canvas that has as its motif a guitar of any size, shape, color, impression, real, acoustic, electric, with or without people, plants, animals, concerts, whatever motif is desired.

Jimmy Baldwin’s “BROWN PAPER KOOZIE DOOZIE”

June 7, 2008

Mineral Wells, TX

Texas singer/songwriter Jimmy Baldwin announces the lineup for his “Brown Paper Koozie Doozie” Festival to be held

Saturday, June 7, 2008 from noon – 7 at the Double J Art Ranch and Hacienda in Mineral Wells, TX.

The festival, celebrating Texas and Americana music, will feature: Jimmy Baldwin, Mark Jungers, Lost Immigrants, Randy Weeks, Glenna Bell, and Nancy Apple.  Tickets for the show are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Camping is available at $15 for the night. The all-day concert will feature a wealth of great roots music and fun and camaraderie in the ranch’s awesome surroundings. Food and beverages can be purchased on site.

Jimmy’s sound, dubbed “ranch rock” by some of its ardent fans, is mellow, rock inflected, purely Americana, beautifully arranged and startlingly original, Jimmy’s music wraps around stories so well told and songs so well written, the listener is instantly transported to a world of cowboys, mermaids, whistling trains and dreams chased across

wide-open spaces. It reflects the pure open landscapes of Jimmy’s home in Texas, and his roots in Kentucky, New Mexico and El Paso.

The Double J Art Ranch and Hacienda, a restored dude ranch that Jimmy and his wife operate as a working inn, spa and “art ranch,” featuring yoga retreats, art gallery shows and special events. In early May, the ranch was the site for a grand event raising funds for Friends of the Brazos River and featuring a concert by Texas legend Butch Hancock. The sweeping majesty of the Brazos River valley deeply influences Jimmy’s upbeat, magical take on life and love, as is evident in this collection of funny, heart-wrenching and glittering songs.

Friday night we'll start off with a parade. Hopefully we?ll have some Art Cars in to help us start the party. We?ll keep you posted on acts as we book them, and we are talking to some great people. If the roar of a motorcycle is more your thing, we'll have a rally leaving Goe's in Angleton on Saturday (time to be announced). Once in Downtown Freeport, we'll have biker games and live music to kick things into gear. If you are too cool for school, you may want to join the fun at the Blues Brothers Look-Alike Contest. Where are you Jake and Elwood? This is a way-cool family event. The kids will have fun on the planned waterslide, the rock-climbing wall and the moonwalk. We had a great turnout of kids last year and we want to make sure folks feel good about bringing their children along -- so mind your manners while you?re having fun. By the way, you are welcome to bring a lawn chair, but no coolers, no vehicles with more than 2 wheels, and no weapons will be allowed in the area. Give our vendors -- which will include many terrific local restaurants -- a chance to serve you great Gulf Coast cuisine.

Every effort is made to provide accurate and current information on these festivals.  But there is no way I can possibly list them all during festival season.  Please check the Texas Music Office for a complete listing of festivals around the state or updated information.  These dates are listed months in advance and are subject to change.  As always, I recommend you "call before you haul".  And remember, there's no such thing as "too much fun".
